Robber cave

---------------

There are many caves in the world, which got special recognition due to their special qualities.  Here we are introducing you to one such cave, which is famous for the bandits.  Situated near the village of Anarwala, about eight km from the city of Dehradun, this cave is known as Robbers Cave (now Guchupani).  Presently this cave is the most popular tourist place in Doon, where people from far and wide come to have a picnic.  Locals believe that the pre-independence bandits used this cave as a safe house to hide from the British army.  This cave was the residence of robber Mansingh.  Passing through the water stream inside this cave, which is about 600 meters long, looks quite exciting as well as creates romance in the mind.  There is a cave feeling going through it.  There are hills on both sides of the flowing water, which seems to be moving in water or looking from far away, as if both hills are connected.  Whereas, in reality it is not so.  These hills are not found among themselves, but its address is known only after passing.  When the tourists go from the middle of the two hills to the other side, the wave of happiness in their mind cannot be described in words.  During the rainy season, the flow of water here takes a terrible form, while in summer it is absolutely calm.

Kautuhl produces a rampart

The Guchupani cave is divided into two parts with an artistic shape amidst dense forest and lush green environment.  In the middle of the cave is a fort wall.  However, the fort no longer exists, but its wall as a relic produces Kautuhl.

The umbrella and chairs attract your attention as soon as the robber leaves the cave.  Sitting here, taking Maggi and hot tea sips makes you feel like sitting in a pool side restaurant.

Santla Devi who loses her anguish

-----------------------------------------

Maa Santla Devi Temple is located just above the Noor River, about 15 km from Dehradun.  From Punjabiwala, travelers have to walk two km to reach the temple.  Punjabiwala is two kilometers from Olivewala, which falls in the Hariyawala Khurd Gram Panchayat.  Legend has it that in the 11th century the king of Nepal came to know that a Mughal emperor wants to marry his daughter Santla Devi.  Then Santla Devi, along with her brother Santoor, walked through the mountainous routes from Nepal to live in a mountain fort in Punjabiwalla, Doon.  The Mughals attacked the fort upon discovering this.  When Santla Devi and her brother realized that they were not capable of fighting the Mughals, Santla Devi threw her arms and meditated on God.  Suddenly a light shone on them and she turned into a stone idol.  At the same time Mughal soldiers who came to attack the fort were also blinded by that glow.  That day was Saturday.  It is said that after this the temple was built in place of the fort and since then devotees come here to worship.  Devotees throng the temple on Saturday.

Gift of nature

If you did not visit Maldevata while in Doon, then you have missed many things.  Maldevata is a very beautiful place located on the border of Tehri district, just ten kilometers north-east of Dehradun city.  Apart from the hills and small waterfalls, the narrow, but still flowing Sung River and the far-flung flat fields provide a wonderful beauty to the region.  Although the area around Maldevata is perfect for walking and photography, but being in seclusion away from the city, it is more appropriate to come here in groups.

Fresh feeling of deer park

-------------------------------

Malsi Deer Park at Rajpur on Dehradun-Mussoorie road in the foothills of Shivalik range  Is famous for its kings.  The park was constructed in the year 1976 in an area of 25 hectares, the scope of which has now been extended.  Tourists usually stop here and enjoy the serene atmosphere before visiting Mussoorie.  It can be reached in just 20 minutes via public transport from Survey Chowk.  Malsi Deer Park has about 344 animals of 27 species.  Especially the ostrich brought from Chennai attracts everyone.  However, now the Central Zoo Authority has increased the status of Malsi Deer Park.  Earlier it used to be in the category of Mini Zoo, but now it has been given the status of Medium.  A park surrounded by natural beauty has also been developed for children.  Due to the enchanting atmosphere one feels freshness, making it an ideal scenic spot and picnic spot.

Gautam kund

----------------

Chandrabani (Chandrabani) temple has its own special place among the tourist places of Doon.  Situated six km away from the city on the Dehradun-Delhi road in the midst of Shivalik ranges, this place has been mythologically described as the abode of Maharishi Gautama, his wife Ahilya and daughter Anjani.  According to another belief, at some point the goddess Ahilya came here with her daughter Anjana.  He is the same Anjana from whom later the origin of Hanumanji is considered.  There is also a pool here.  It is believed that Maharshi Gautama was pleased with the penance, where the mother Ganga had appeared here, hence its name Gautam Kund.  Situated two kilometers away from the main road, this kund has been told its special importance.  It is said that by taking a dip in this tank, all the sufferings of man are destroyed.  Every year a large number of devotees take a dip.  On the occasion of Baisakhi, a huge fair is organized here for two to three days.

Witness to valor

-------------------

You must have seen the Kalinga (Khalanga) memorial on Sahasradhara Road in Doon.  It is related to Gorkha general Balabhadra Singh Khalinga Thapa, who built a fort on the hill, just behind the Kalinga memorial, between 1802-03 to 1815.  It is called Khalanga Fort.  It is a highly inaccessible place about eight kilometers north-east of Dehradun city and about 850 meters above sea level in the mid-year dense forest of Nankurkheda, Mangaluwala, Bazhet, Asthal and Kirsali villages.  In the year 1814, on the Khalanga hill near Nalapani, only 600 Gorkha soldiers had chewed the ten thousand number of English forces.  The special thing is that Gorkha soldiers had only khukri in the name of weapons.  Whereas, British army was equipped with guns and cannon.  In this battle, while Balbhadra Singh led martyrdom in the battle, martyrdom was found, while the commander of the British army was also killed.  The victorious British army built two monuments on the Sahasradhara road, five km from the city of Dehradun, in memory of their heroes Major General Robert Rollo Jillespie and Balabhadra Thapa.  In this, Balabhadra Thapa and his army are addressed as 'Veer Dushman'.

There are also some places in Doon, which nature has created just for fun.  One of them is Lachhiwala Picnic Place located just 17 km from Dehradun.  The lush green forest and wild animals roaming in it, the swimming pool on the river of the Song River gives it amazing beauty.  In fact, Lachhiwala, spread over an area of 12 hectares on the banks of the Song River, is an extension of the Rajaji Tiger Reserve.  Its biggest feature is that people of all types of economic status can enjoy a walk here.  Even to enjoy sailing one has to pay a nominal amount.  This is the reason that there is a fair on holiday days.  The picnic spot is open to tourists from October 1 to March 31 from 9 am to 5 pm and from 1 April to 30 September from 8 am to 6 pm.  There is a nominal fee to enter the park.  Tourist accommodation is also available in the guest house of the forest department.  Lachhiwala is also one of the most popular forest houses in the region, which serves as an administrative and tourist center.
